A neurological disorder of recurrent, usually throbbing headaches, often with sensory disturbances — not just 'a bad headache'.

Common symptoms

  • Unilateral throbbing pain
  • Light and sound sensitivity
  • Nausea
  • Visual aura (in ~25%)

Common causes

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Hormonal fluctuation
  • Sleep irregularity
  • Dietary triggers (specific to each patient)

Migraine is under-diagnosed and over-medicated. A careful history and 8-week diary changes management for most patients.

Diagnosis

Clinical, based on pattern and exclusion. We use headache diaries for 4–8 weeks before any imaging unless red flags are present.

Treatment overview

Acute (triptans, anti-CGRP) and preventive (protocol-driven). Our headache clinic starts every new patient with a structured 8-week preventive arc before pharmacological escalation.

When to book

More than 4 headache days a month, escalating intensity, or any 'worst headache of my life' — book neurology.
